ANZ BangaloreANZ National Bank Ltd., New Zealand's biggest lender, plans to move some operational and processing work to Bangalore over the next 18 months.

By the end of 2009 about 5 percent of the bank's work will have moved to the Indian city, Wellington-based ANZ National said today in a statement e-mailed to Bloomberg News. Bank unions estimate about 500 workers will be affected by the decision.

ANZ National is a unit of Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd., which employs about 1,800 workers in Bangalore for operations work. No staff who deal with customers face to face, including contact-center workers, are included in the plan, the company said.

The bank told staff about the plan today and said the fact that about 800 new workers are hired each year should allow it to redeploy workers who wish to stay with the bank in new roles over the next 18 months.

The decision ``shows no commitment to the New Zealand workforce and community,'' Council of Trade Unions President Helen Kelly said today in a statement.
